Origin — Alaska, USA (Arctic sled dog)
Coat — Thick, coarse, weatherproof double coat with a dense oily woolly undercoat and a harsh outer coat. Profuse and heavy-shedding.
Recognised colours — Grey, sable, red, black, or seal — all with white; always a white underbody, legs, feet and facial markings.
Affectionate, friendly, loyal and playful — but powerful and independent. A pack-oriented hauler that loves people.
Trainability — Challenging — intelligent but stubborn and independent; needs experienced, consistent, patient training.
Grooming — Very high. Brush several times weekly; intense daily brushing during the twice-yearly coat blow. Never shave.
Good with — Friendly and affectionate with family and children; high prey drive and dog-dominance need management. Diggers and escape artists.
A heavy Arctic breed very poorly suited to Indian heat — demands full AC, shade, water and exercise only in the coolest hours. Heat stroke is a serious risk.
Health notes — Hip dysplasia, chondrodysplasia (dwarfism), polyneuropathy, hypothyroidism, cataracts, bloat, zinc-responsive dermatosis.
