Coat — Thick, moderately long, slightly wavy weatherproof double coat with a bright natural sheen.

Recognised colours — Striking tricolour: jet black base with rich rust and clean white markings (blaze, chest cross, paws).

Gentle, calm, affectionate and good-natured. A devoted, easy-going gentle giant — placid and deeply family-oriented.

Trainability — High — eager to please and sensitive; responds beautifully to gentle, positive training.

Grooming — High. Brush several times weekly; heavy seasonal shedding of the thick coat.

Good with — Wonderful with children, families and other pets. A calm, loving family companion when kept cool.

A heavy-coated Alpine breed very sensitive to Indian heat — strict AC, shade, water and cool-hour exercise are essential. Heat is a real danger.

Health notes — Cancer (high incidence — the main lifespan limiter), hip/elbow dysplasia, bloat, histiocytic sarcoma, degenerative myelopathy.
