Origin — Belgium / France

Coat — Short, dense, weatherproof single coat; loose, supple skin with the breed's famous wrinkles and folds.

Recognised colours — Black-and-tan, liver-and-tan, and red; small white markings tolerated.

Gentle, placid, affectionate and famously single-minded on a scent. A patient, easy-going giant with an unmatched nose.

Trainability — Low–moderate — intelligent but extremely independent and scent-driven; patient, consistent, food-based training needed.

Grooming — Moderate. Weekly brushing; clean the deep facial folds and long ears regularly to prevent infection.

Good with — Wonderful, tolerant and gentle with children and other pets; needs secure fencing (it will follow a scent for miles).

Tolerates Indian heat moderately; the folds need drying to prevent dermatitis, and the heavy frame should not over-exert in humidity.

Health notes — Bloat (gastric torsion — major), hip/elbow dysplasia, ectropion/entropion, skin-fold dermatitis, ear infections.
