Origin — Anglo-Scottish border

Coat — Two varieties — rough (medium-length, feathered) and smooth (short, coarser); dense weatherproof double coat.

Recognised colours — Black-and-white most common; also red, blue, merle, tricolour, sable and more — white never predominant.

The most intelligent of all breeds — intensely focused, energetic, sensitive and work-obsessed. A herding genius.

Trainability — Supreme — unmatched problem-solving and obedience; needs constant mental challenge.

Grooming — Moderate. Brush twice weekly; more during shedding seasons.

Good with — Best with very active, experienced owners; herding drive may make it nip and chase without an outlet.

Copes with Indian heat if exercised in cool hours, but the intense drive demands hours of daily work — unsuited to idle homes.
