Origin — Italy

Coat — Short, stiff, dense and shiny single coat with a light undercoat; very low maintenance.

Recognised colours — Black, grey (blue), fawn, red, and brindle variations; a black or grey mask is typical.

Confident, calm, intelligent and intensely protective. A powerful Italian mastiff-guardian — devoted and steady, yet imposing.

Trainability — High intelligence but dominant and strong-willed; needs an experienced, confident owner and early, thorough socialisation.

Grooming — Very low. Weekly wipe-down and brush.

Good with — Best with experienced owners; deeply loyal and protective of family, naturally wary of strangers. Powerful — must be well-managed.

The short coat copes reasonably with Indian heat; exercise in cool hours. A powerful breed needing space, structure and a job.

Health notes — Hip/elbow dysplasia, bloat (gastric torsion), entropion/ectropion, dilated cardiomyopathy, demodectic mange.
