Origin — Mexico

Coat — Soft, fine, flat or slightly wavy long coat with feathering on ears, legs, feet and a plumed tail; ruff on neck.

Recognised colours — Any colour or combination — fawn, black, white, chocolate, cream, blue, tri-colour, merle and more.

Bold, alert, spirited and intensely loyal to one person. Big personality in a tiny frame; can be wary of strangers.

Trainability — Moderate — intelligent but strong-willed; early socialisation prevents 'small-dog syndrome'.

Grooming — Low–moderate. Brush the long coat a few times weekly.

Good with — Best with gentle older children and calm households. Bonds deeply with one or two people.

Loves warmth and tolerates Indian heat well, but is fragile and chills easily in AC or winter — provide a sweater in cold rooms.

Health notes — Patellar luxation, dental disease, hydrocephalus, hypoglycaemia in puppies, tracheal collapse. Handle gently.
