🐾 The Canine Capital Verdict
A striking but demanding breed needing experienced handling and committed heat management — not a first-timer's dog.
Origin & Coat

Origin — China (ancient breed)

Coat — Two types — rough (profuse, dense, stand-off double coat with a mane) and smooth (hard, dense, shorter). Blue-black tongue.

Recognised colours — Solid red, black, blue, cinnamon, or cream; clear shadings permitted but no patches.

Temperament

Dignified, aloof, independent and intensely loyal to its family. A reserved, cat-like guardian — proud and serious.

Care & Training

Trainability — Challenging — stubborn and strong-willed; early socialisation and patient, respectful training essential.

Grooming — High. The rough coat needs frequent brushing to prevent matting; heavy seasonal shedding.

Good with — Best with experienced owners and calm older children; naturally reserved and territorial with strangers.

India Climate & Health

Heavy double coat plus a deep muzzle makes this a very heat-sensitive breed — AC, shade and cool exercise hours essential in India.

Health notes — Hip/elbow dysplasia, entropion (eye), patellar luxation, hypothyroidism, heat sensitivity, autoimmune skin disease.
