Origin — Germany

Coat — Short, thick, smooth and glossy single coat; very low maintenance.

Recognised colours — Fawn, brindle, blue, black, harlequin (white with black patches), mantle, and merle.

Gentle, friendly, dignified and affectionate — the 'Apollo of dogs' and a true gentle giant. Calm, patient and devoted to family.

Trainability — Moderate–high — intelligent and willing; gentle, consistent training from puppyhood is vital given the eventual size.

Grooming — Very low. Weekly wipe-down and brush.

Good with — Wonderful with children, families and other pets. A calm, loving companion that simply needs space.

The short coat handles Indian heat reasonably; the giant frame should not over-exert in humidity — exercise in cool hours and provide shade and water.

Health notes — Short lifespan; bloat (gastric torsion — major, feed carefully), dilated cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia, bone cancer, wobbler syndrome.
