Recognised colours — Rich chestnut to mahogany red — the breed's signature glowing coat; small white markings tolerated.
Outgoing, exuberant, affectionate and playful. A joyful, sociable gun dog that stays puppyish for years.
Trainability — Moderate — intelligent but easily distracted and slow to mature; patient, positive training needed.
Grooming — Moderate–high. Regular brushing of the feathering plus periodic trimming; clean the long ears.
Good with — Great with active families and children; friendly with strangers and other dogs.
Moderate heat tolerance; exercise in cool hours and dry the coat after monsoon walks. Needs lots of activity.
