Origin — Germany / Switzerland (and the black-and-white Newfoundland type)

Coat — Long, dense, water-resistant double coat, fine and slightly wavy; profuse feathering. A natural water-rescue dog.

Recognised colours — Clear white base with distinct black markings (black head and patches on a white body).

Gentle, calm, friendly and dignified. A devoted, good-natured giant — patient, sociable and famously fond of water.

Trainability — High — willing, sensitive and eager to please; responds to gentle, positive training.

Grooming — High. Brush several times weekly; heavy seasonal shedding; dry thoroughly after water/monsoon.

Good with — Wonderful with children, families and other pets. A placid, loving gentle giant.

A heavy double-coated water dog very sensitive to Indian heat — strict AC, shade, water and cool-hour exercise are essential.

Health notes — Hip/elbow dysplasia, bloat (gastric torsion), cardiac conditions, cystinuria, heat sensitivity.
