🐾 The Canine Capital Verdict
India's flagship indigenous sighthound — heat-adapted, healthy, athletic and proudly Deccan; a superb, conservation-worthy choice for the region.
Origin & Coat

Origin — Karnataka, India (Mudhol, Bagalkot district)

Coat — Short, fine, close single coat (a rare 'feathered' variety has light feathering); minimal grooming and low odour.

Recognised colours — Fawn, cream, red, black, blue, fawn-and-white, and various combinations.

Temperament

Graceful, alert, loyal and aloof. India's premier indigenous sighthound (also called the Caravan Hound) — devoted to family, reserved with strangers, and used by the Indian Army.

Care & Training

Trainability — Moderate — intelligent and sensitive but independent; gentle, consistent, respectful training works best.

Grooming — Very low. Occasional wipe-down.

Good with — Best with active homes and its own family; bonds deeply, reserved with outsiders, with a strong prey drive and need to run.

India Climate & Health

A native Karnataka breed perfectly adapted to the Deccan heat — exceptionally well-suited to India's climate and naturally hardy.

Health notes — One of the healthiest, hardiest breeds with very few hereditary issues — a robust indigenous sighthound. Lean build needs warmth when cold.
