Origin — Southern Africa (Zimbabwe / South Africa)

Coat — Short, dense, sleek and glossy single coat with the breed's signature forward-growing ridge along the spine.

Recognised colours — Light wheaten to red wheaten; a little white on the chest and toes is permitted; a black or brown nose.

Dignified, confident, independent and loyal. A powerful African lion-hound — devoted and calm at home, reserved and protective outdoors.

Trainability — Moderate — highly intelligent but independent and strong-willed; needs an experienced, consistent owner and early socialisation.

Grooming — Very low. Weekly wipe-down and brush.

Good with — Devoted family guardian; good with children it is raised with. Strong prey drive and aloofness with strangers need management.

An African breed with excellent heat tolerance — one of the best-suited large breeds for India's climate. Still needs shade and water.
